Let your imagination be your guide and Heart Wear Designs will bring your wardrobe fantasy into reality.

Heart Wear Designs is committed to creating beautiful and comfortable clothing that is a pleasure to wear. Enhance your wardrobe with a corset that is luxurious, durable and custom fit just for you.

This is a sample. The corset has yet to be made specifically for you.

* The outer fabric will be of your choosing from a variety available.
* The corset is fully lined with heavy satin backed coat lining or cotton lining.
* There are 12-16 spring steel bones or spiral steel bones, either 1/4 inch or 1/2 wide.
* There is narrow trim at the top and bottom edges.
* A modesty panel can be added at the back.
* The grommets at the back will be be silver, black or gold coloured metal.

It contours over your breasts and cinches the waist. You can lace it up tight back to give yourself a truly wonderful sexy hour glass silhouette.

For tightlacing additional boning and reinforcement must be added. Contact me with your requirements and the cost. Corsets should be fitted by waist and bust size instead of bra size. Please take a tape measure and measure your waist at the narrowest point (the part that you would want to enhance and cinch in) then measure your chest around at the widest point, usually across the nipple. For both of these hold the tape measure snug instead of tight.

Then your corset should be 2-5 inches (when closed) smaller than your natural waist.

There are two ways to lace up your corset.
One is like an ice skate. That is for when you do not want the edges to meet.

The other is an over, under on the same side, then cross over, repeat pattern. This is when you are tight lacing and you desire the edges of your corset to meet snugly.

This brides maids dress was completed but the client did not return phone calls, pick it up or pay for it. It was a frusterating experience but a good lesson.

I had a great time creating a fairy dress with wings for Sadie. It took longer to gather the skirt, cut down/take in waist, make wings, bead and make a cotton lining for than it took to make the original dress. :)

The best part is that it FITS.

Klahanie's fancy Gown.
These photos do not do the outfit justice. Klahanie is much taller than my dress form and has limbs so will look stunning.

"Kirst!

It's gorgeous!!!!!!!! Omigod!!!! Thank you!!!

As you can tell. I was right and she is gorgeous.

Client Testimonial:

"Kirsten,
I received the corset and necklace today. They are absolutely gorgeous.
I'm extremely impressed with how well the corset fits and feels (the
leather is so soft! and the lining is great.)
The patience was completely worth it and I am very appreciative that you
continued to work on it. It is honestly one of the most beautiful
clothing pieces I own. Thank you so much.
Catie"

Corset Tips:

A leather corset with a heavy satin coat lining with metal boning should be taken to a leather cleaning specialist. If you wear a shirt or some other fabric between your skin and the corset it will require fewer cleanings.
When you first start wearing your corset, do not lace it to tightly wait until the leather warms to your body temperature, and then start to wear it snuggly for short periods of time, a half hour to an hour to gently break it in. You should not lace it up tightly immediately as you need to give the piece time to shape to your body.

All of our corsets are comprised of a steel-boned and heavy cotton interior, with outer fabric and lining of your choosing. The shape of your corset, custom-fit to you, will be based on styles from historical periods.

Custom work, as a rule, is going to cost more than off the rack items will. If you are content with mass produced, cheaply made and ill fitting garments then custom designed and handcrafted items are not for you. You will find, however, that the cost of a custom fitted, quality made garment is not going to break the bank. You will need to discuss the options with Kirsten and settle on a price range that works for you both. Price is affected by fabric choice and quantity, complexity of design and trim options.

The skirt is snug at the waist and hips, it flares to a generous width at the hem with a bit of a tail the back. The fabric goes from a light at the waist to darker at the hem with a sparkle over the surface.

A little less than 3 weeks ago I got a frantic call from a young woman who needed a bridesmaids dress made in a hurry. She had fabric but no pattern. I sent her off to find a style and pattern that were to her liking. We had a consultation, did measurements and agreed on a cost estimate. She was to pay a deposit at her first fitting.

I called her a few days later and we set up an appointment for the fitting. She did not show up or call or return the 5 or 6 subsiquent phone calls since then. From what I was told at our consultation today was when she was leaving to Ontario, I think, for the wedding.

As you can see the dress is finished but the client has been nowhere to be found. I am out time, the cost of notions, stress related to wondering what the heck happened and not having a day off in the past month.

I am very pleased with the results but will make sure to get a deposit prior to even cutting the fabric next time.

A little diversion in creative expression.
This is a fairy costume for my niece. It is all in one for convenience. It would be tragic if during an urge to be a happy little fairy the wings were no where to be found.

The cape is lime green, as you can see but that was not bright enough. I had to go and add the reflective tape. The closure at the neck is velcro for quick release purposes. I haven't figured out how to put an airbag or automatic medical team in the seams yet.

I: S.H.Camp and his Amazing Corsets

The Development of the Fan-lacing Corset

Lacing a corset was traditionally the job of the lady's maid. Romantically we may imagine the young woman being eased out of her stays by her ardent lover, but in the cold light of dawn, it was the maid or the Mother who would tighten the laces. The laces were virtually always in the back of the corset since that preserved the tight, clean lines at the front of the dress. With maids to help, there was no reason to mount the lacing anywhere else.

How to get yourself into a corset with front opening busk.

The assumption is this will be easy, it is not unless done properly. I hope to have pictures to demonstrate this at some point.

1. Loosen the ties in the back, do not allow them to come out of the eyelets/grommets but loosen it dramatically. It needs to fit around you easily.

2. Do up the busk, start at the bottom and work up. This is fairly simple provided you have followed step one. If you have not then this part is difficult to almost impossible.

3. Start to tighten the lacing. Yes you are working with your hands behind you and this takes a bit of practice. The method of lacing you have used will affect how quickly you can do this. The "rabbit ears" at the waist is advantageous. This method creates two places to tighten and loosen your corset: the bottom and the waist.

4. As the corset gets snug, tie the lacing and adjust your breasts, you do not want them getting flattened and they will have been hanging naturally while you have followed these steps. Use your hands and lift them into place before the corset is tightened. If someone else is helping to pull the laces then raise your arms above your head before the tightening process begins, this will lift your breasts into a better position, manual adjustment may still be needed.

5. Tighten the corset to a comfortable feel.

You can tighten your corset more after about half an hour and more still later. This is easiest if you have not put on the dress yet!
To remove your corset you must again loosen the lacing. Trying to undo or do up a corset without first loosening the lacing may result in bent busk "eyes". They are quite strong when the pressure is applied after it is done up but not before. Much like a zipper, strong when done up but hard to do up under pressure.

Popularised by films such as `Titanic, Moulin Rouge' and `Chicago', the corset is on its way back into the fashion circuit.

THE CORSET hits fashion charts like never before. It is a descendant of the 15th century `bodice', which was stiffened by two pieces of linen pasted together. Derived from the French word, `corps', which means `body', the corset was constructed of whalebone pieces, inserted as panelling. Worn under a dress, the corsets were laced tightly to thrust the bust forward.

Female Baroque Costumes

Ladies' Baroque Clothing
During the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, French fashion took over the leading role in Europe. This was caused by France having developed into the main political and cultural power, thus turning French fashion into an equally "absolutistic" regime. During the period from 1660 onwards, fashion in France, according to the absolutistic ideal, became rigid, ordered and strict in its do's and don'ts of etiquette.

About 10 years after Louis XIV's accession to the throne and maturity in the year 1661, the entirety of Europe was under the dictatorship of the French royal fashion in about 1670. From that date on European rulers strove to imitate the powerful Sun King, they even lost national differences and diversities in fashion, thus French fashion became world fashion.

In 1970, Jones established Nautilus Sports/Medical Industries. As of 1984, there were over 3,000 Nautilus Fitness Centers (each of which had to have at least 12 Nautilus machines to use the name), plus numerous other machines in training rooms, colleges, high schools and professional sports teams. Since then, other machines such as Cybex and Paramount have been developed to help isolate and work individual muscle groups. the rest of article

The effect of this has been noticeable. The "hot" bodies shown in movies half a century ago would be laughed at in today's rippling "cut" or "buff" images. Even Barry pointed out that George Reeves, in his Superman suit in the 1950's TV series, had a noticeable potbelly, and not the "six-pack" required for any actor playing that role today.

With the explosion of cheap clothing made available by the Industrial Revolution, it is hard today to tell social status. Most people can't tell a Paris original from a K-Mart's rip-off, and thus the effect of wearing the best clothes is lost on average viewer. Thus to some extent, the body itself is becoming the fashion statement - tan, muscles, hair length and color, tattoos, and pierced body parts.

Thus the connection between being fit and what was considered an ideal body shape is of fairly recent times. There are people today who take working out and in particular, losing weight, to unhealthy extremes, because they suffer from a poor body image. This is in the same vein that Victorian ladies laced their corsets up so tight they displaced their internal organs.
Corset-Sears-1908

The other thing to consider is that fitness is a science still in its infancy. If it seems like every couple of months they changed their ideas, they do! Back when I was in school, gym teachers told you NOT to drink water when you exercised on a hot day, as they claimed it would give you cramps. Instead they gave out salt tablets. (It's a wonder any of us survived.)

DELIVERY: Corset delivery times, especially on custom pieces, can be up to 60 days.

SIZING: For best fit, you should buy a corset that is 2"-4" SMALLER than your NATURAL waist size. Because of the laced closure, both cinchers and corsets have about 2 inches of "play" in them, to accommodate wearers of slightly different sizes.

Please take into consideration the amount of "compressible flesh" you may have. A thin person may have trouble compressing even two inches, while a fleshy person may be able to easily compress four inches. We do not recommend compression greater than four inches except for experienced tightlacers.

We also do not recommend that you buy a corset that laces completely closed; if you lose weight, the corset will no longer fit you. In fact, a corset that laces completely closed with little to no compression is probably TOO LARGE for you.

All of our corsets are comprised of a steel-boned and heavy cotton interior, with outer fabric and lining of your choosing. The shape of your corset, custom-fit to you, will be based on one of the historical periods. But the exterior and lining may have nothing to do with history. For example, you may decide on an Edwardian-style corset of lemon yellow lamb suede, lined in pale blue handkerchief linen. Although your corset's shape will be Edwardian, its general look will not be. At the turn of the last century a lemon yellow lamb suede corset would not have been too common!

On the other hand, you may want a corset that is a copy of one you've seen in a book or in the movies. We can help you get the look you want, using modern materials that imitate the old ones without being fragile with age.

At Heart Wear Designs we are most happy to serve a diverse clientele of men and women who want to wear their corsets in a variety of settings. We want to design and build you the best corset in the world.

We will make the corset to your specifications if you know just what you want. We also offer a 1/2 hour no-cost, no-obligation consultation service in my studio or at your home to help you choose style, shape, fabric, and colour. Pattern making and consultation services without corset purchase are also available at $25/hour

Corsets serve one primary function: to give the body a "fashionable" shape. The rebellious body tends to resist unnatural shaping; therefore, the main requirement for a corset is strength. Aside from the shapes of the pattern pieces themselves, the two factors involved in a corset's shaping strength are: the fabric of the garment and the stiffening used.

You must discuss your design options and fabric variables with Kirsten before a final price is arrived at.

Mary Lincoln probably purchased her machine-stitched cloak as a ready-made garment. Outer wraps were the first ready-made garments for women. Cloaks were commercially available as early as the 1840s, although large-scale production of other women's garments lagged behind the manufacture of men's clothing. Commercial sewing machines were readily available by the 1850s and the styles of American manufactured cloaks or mantles soon rivaled those from Paris.

Textiles and Technology

Wearable computing builds upon recent advances in computer miniaturization, wireless technology and internetworking to open up a new field of computing. The vision behind it is that a mobile computer should not just be a machine that we put into our pocket when we plan on doing some office work while on the road. Instead it will be an integral part of our every day outfit (hence wearable), always operational and equipped to assist us in dealing with a wide range of situations. Our group focuses on the hardware and system architecture challenges posed by the wearable computing vision.

Welcome to our Sewing Machine Collection

We have been collecting antique and vintage sewing machines for about six years and have over ninety machines shown on the site together with information about many of the various manufacturers. The site is kept uptodate with the latest information available to us. We specialise in British and German made machines which are still available here in Britain at reasonable prices, although we do have examples of machines made in Canada and the U.S.A.
